I don't own a POD HD500 but suggest taking it one step at a time,
either audio capture or variax.  If you have access to a Windows
machine or virtual machine where you can capture USB traffic it should
be much easier to understand how the driver needs to behave.  Linux
has the "usbmon" kernel module which works fine with KVM and probably
VirtualBox.

Perhaps the variax interface is simply a tunnel straight to the variax
device.  In other words, the POD doesn't interpret or change the data,
it simply forwards it to the variax device.  That's just a guess.
