FLY ASHES TURNED INTO VALUE-ADDED PRODUCTS

THE MANAGEMENT of coal-fired power plant (PLTU)
Suralaya in Serang, West Java, which yields fly ashes,
makes a big effort to turn wastes into economic
products.

The effort gives a good contribution to
diversification of natural resources in sustainable
and environmentally-friendly development of Indonesia,
of which can be gained with conservation and recycle
technologies. The ash-processing unit of PLTU Suralaya
conducts the job. This all was disclosed to
Miningindo.com and Miningindo Journal at Regional
Autonomy Expo 2001 the Jakarta Convention Center on
Thursday (3/1)

Cooperation has been made with parties such as NGO,
government agency and experts from Gadjah Mada
University in Yogyakarta, who are interested in
utilizing and studying fly ashes. Cooperation is
conducted based on work contract of research on fly
ashes: they have to be technically and economically
proved when used as mineral admixtures for small and
large industries.

Utilization of fly ashes in various sectors is already
in good progress. Fly ashes from PLTU Suralaya are not
only turned into economic by-product but also mainstay
commodities.

Fly ashes are of amorph and pozzolant particles coming
out from plants boiler. These ashes are reactive to
limestone in water at room temperature, of which tends
to generate bonding solution. With their pozzolant
characteristics, fly ashes are prospective for
construction materials, which have been used in civil,
chemical and agricultural sectors with minimal
environmental disadvantage.

Fly ashes from PLTU Suralaya contain key particles of
cement, ceramics, glass, quartz, zeolith, and 7% of
Si, Al, Fe oxides; and are acceptable under the
standard of American Society for Testing and Materials
(ASTM), having specific gravity at 2.42 g/cc, moisture
0.49%, and 94% of their material having fineness at 45
u m.

PLTU Suralaya produces 1500-2000 tons of ashes
everyday, comprising 80% fly ashes and 20% bottom
ashes. Their high-added value is of cement, concrete,
ceramics, and lime, while low-added value is for
agriculture, fertilizer, reclamation, cultivation,
forestry, construction site, mine-fill, rehabilitation
of uncontrolled landfills. (Ar)
