To add to the mystery of all this all CDs now work. I tested everything imaginable on the crappy test machine with low memory (the way I had successfully replicated the problem before). I burned a fresh CD, took more of the duped copies, took it across the Network everything. At first it was slow loading - so I thought I was just getting confirmation. I aborted the CD load because it was taking forever. Then I loaded it through the network - thinking surely that would jump and start and be slow ... it tested fine. So I tested the CDs again and they were fine too - loaded fine, played fine ... all of them- even the one which tested bad last week.
This might be a gremlin - but how to explain it to the client or the end user ... something like "to get this cd to play right load it, if it fails hold you mouth right, stress about it over the weekend and try again).
