I posted a problem a few weeks ago about embedded fonts and windows 2000, there were a few replies to my posting, none of which could help the situation very much, not to say that I was not grateful for the input of those replies. I have come to the end of a 6 month project using Director as the main authoring tool and I had been using an embedded font. On running the CD-ROM on Windows 2000 machines as a restricted user, I suspect Windows NT and XP Pro too, the font was not being displayed and the default Arial was instead. As a result text was wrapping all over the place and text used in graphics layouts was also misplaced. We only discovered this in our testing phase and it is a nightmare. The reason (and many of you will know this already) is that only Power users or Administrators are allowed permission to write to the system 32 folder where Directors embedded font gets temporarily decompressed to. If you are not an administrator or power user i.e almost everybody but you, the program will use a default system font such as Arial.
There seems to be no way around this and I have spent the last 2 weeks sorting this issue out (by changing the font to Arial!) , including its knock on effects!! I thought it a good idea to bring this issue to your attention - oh but hold on Macromedia do have 2 solutions...I Quote: "The user will need to log in as a Power User or Administrator to view the embedded fonts in a Director movie. Alternatively, the developer can choose to build the Director movie without the use of embedded fonts. " http://www.macromedia.com/support/director/ts/documents/font_embed_win2k.htm The reason people have restricted access is just that - their access needs to be restricted, so there is no chance they can just log on as Administrators that is a JOKE I have to admit that I am relatively new to Director and Macromedia but this is a major restriction on how you design a project, those graphic deigners amonst you will have a fit (I'm guessing) if I said either all your text has to be in Arial or you have to convert all your text to bitmaps!!! - macromedia's solutions are not solutions AT ALL. Is this just me talking out of turn has anybody else had this sort of problem?? The more I get into Director and I hit upon a problem where I get really stuck - there is always an issue to which MM gives you a solution where there is no solution at all. I feel better for getting that off my chest !
