For the highest quality possible on CD I would go with DivX or MPEG4. (They're the same thing.) With them, you can get ultra-high quality with very little processor overhead (combined with a small file size, that makes it the ultimate codec). The only problem with it is that QuickTime doesn't support it yet... You can get free codecs for Windows Media Player and Mac QT, though, as well as a free DivX player.
