If you think you'll be changing them a lot, it's best to either have them 
as linked files, or at least keep the source file around and reimport it, 
so you can always edit the source file.

However, yes, you can do it.  Go to File | Preferences | Editors and there 
you will see a list of the media types that Director supports.  Choose the 
type you want, click "edit" to edit the definition, and then choose an 
external editor to set for that media type.  Then, when you go to edit your 
castmember, it'll invoke that editor.

I find this method cumbersome, and prefer to just keep a source file, but 
if you ever need to "extract" your sound or bitmap from Director, this is 
one way to pull it off, though I don't like doing it this way on a regular 
basis.
