Hmm. Interesting, Phil--thanks for the info. Double-click on the font,
and everything reverts to the original name, with the * at the end. Text
using the renamed font says that font is missing.

I've been doing this for years with no problems, though, probably
because I rarely open a font once I import it. It seems to be specific
to opening the font.
