a method to record to compressed sound format I've used before is to record
to a temporary wav file, and then, in a second step, convert it with
lame.exe (commandline version) to mp3 (and afterwards delete the wav). lame
is free, it's small (190 KB) and it's really fast. if you don't like a
command window popping up, you could execute it as hidden app (with
masterapp or budapi, i think).
i've only used it on pc, though. i know there are lame ports to mac, but I'm
not sure if they support applescript or any other solution.
