I charge $80/hr in Boston and have plenty of work. I think if you are just starting, you'd probably have a hard time getting traction, but I went into the downturn with a lot of contacts, and I think I'm getting a lot of the excess work when companies have laid off half their staff and can't get their work done.
It helps to have an extremely broad skill set -- the wider the better. I never tell someone I don't have the skills to do a particular job: if I lack what they need, I do a crash course. Incidentally, Tab, I don't know about Western Mass, but if you are charging $10/hr in Boston, you're getting ripped. $10/hr is the legal minimum wage in Cambridge -- guys at McDonalds earn better. Even the staffing firms (places like Aquent) don't pay less than $20 last I checked (though admittedly they don't have much to offer). Cheers!
