The same way you get to Carnegie Hall--practice, practice, practice.

You're right about books in one sense. They will get you started, and they all 
reflect the author's programming bias. However, I don't know of any *bad* 
Director books out there. They're all pretty good for, at least, getting 
started. Then you code stuff yourself. You'll develop your own style soon 
enough.
