I use german special chars all the time and never had this problem. I think something is wrong with the fonts you are using. Are you using embedded fonts or system fonts? Which ones? And where does the text come from? Is it set/changed at runtime?
I have some lingo code for converting mac-strings to ANSI-strings and v.v., that I could send you. But propably it's better to find out what causes those troubles, instead of fixing the symptoms.
