Ok, I think I see what's happening. My cast member was a #shape, which doesn't have those properties. I created a #vectorShape, and it does.

Hmmm...I'm not even sure how I created the #shape in the first place. I
think I copied it from an old program. Is that something that's changed
in the last few incarnations of Director? I'm still on plain MX.

nope -

#shape is created using the Tool Palatte
#vectorShape is using the vector window

If you want to colorize a sprite made from a vector member, then set the member colors well, or else you may get unexpected results (as when one colorizes a bitmap sprite)
