The best way to burn a CD on a Mac is to create a CD-size partition (like a
drive within your hard drive), place all your distribution files there, and
then burn a CD-ROM that is a duplicate of that partition (more or less). If
you're burning a hybrid (cross-platform) CD-ROMs, that is the only way to
do it.

The icon that you give this partition on your desktop is the icon that will
be burned into the CD-ROM. To give this partition an icon that is different
from the default, click on a file whose icon you want to use, open its Get
Info box in Finder, click the icon there and choose Copy from the Edit
menu. The open the Get Info box for the partition I talked about above,
click the icon, and choose Paste from the Edit menu.

These steps should do what you want, and if you don't want to copy an
existing icon, then you can create one in ResEdit (download that for free
from Apple's site, where it is well hidden under Updates).

I've been struggling with the alpha channel in my icons (trying to make
some areas of the icon transparent, like all good icons are). I've had some
good advice from folks on this list, and if I succeed tonight, I'll be
happy to share all the step-by-step details.
