I did a big project last year that used complex financial formulas in
the manner of what you are describing. I found it easier to work from
the original Excel formulas. I also found that it was immensely
helpful to get the original person who wrote the spreadsheet model to
rewrite the Excel formulas in PLAIN ENGLISH & then I would translate
them to code. anything else took 3-4 times as long.
