Yup, But I'm sure 'Mr Broadband' will be able to negotiate a gold-plated deal with Telstra for their disintegrating copper, that will see Telstra shareholders living high off the hog for years to come for an asset that has been depreciated to (for tax purposes), and has been run-into-the-ground by maintenance neglect to, be worth nothing in accounting terms. Big Dave will essentially sell a millstone around Telstra's neck to the Australian taxpayer for billions, ably assisted by 'Mr Broadband' and the other geniuses in the government.
Just as I'm sure that when Telstra does run the FttN test that 'Mr Broadband' is financing, it will pass with flying colours and the copper chosen (probably installed specifically for the test site) will pass muster admirably. Naturally, the new 'Telstra Copper Rent' (in addition to the $11 billion the previous government paid for use of the ducts - hereinafter referred to as the 'Duct Rent') will come off the $29 billion the current government has assigned for the reduced NBN, and no doubt the copper/fibre design will not please investors when the NBN is effectively privatised down the track ... so perhaps Telstra will be able to charge the government yet again to take this NBN white elephant off their back. But, the Australian taxpayer can handle that with a 'Mr Broadband' levy on their tax. :) Instead of a profit, we'll be selling a fifth rate network into private hands (or more likely paying some rent-seeker corporation to take the obsolete piece of junk off the government's hands) and ensuring that we are screwed once again. Such is politics in Australia ... nobody remembers the long long list of debacles. God I love this country! One screw up to the next ... and we still elect them!
