Perhaps dirver-less cars could increase road capacity by implementing 
dynamic contraflow. A convoy of cars would drive at full speed down the 
"wrong" side of the street. When they encountered traffic coming the 
opposite direction they would signal to the cars in the adjacent lane to 
make room, swerving out of the way at the last second. Something similar 
is already done with some trains which share the one track, both ways, 
but it does not always work:
