It would be great if someone could build the linux client from sources and see what happens.
https://repology.org/project/linphone/versions could give an idea of the enthousiasm and success (or lack thereof) that all sorts of linux distributions have had with compiling and packaging linphone
from there, you could probably find your way to the respective mailing list where the maintainers actually discuss what happens. But the difference is that nobody there will want an appimage so the work is compiling the code against different library versions (the ones the distro ships) - whereas if you compile the upstream source as a user, what *should* happen is that you get the identical appimages that you could also grab from https://download.linphone.org/releases/ and https://download.linphone.org/snapshots/ depending on which branch you pick
