We have several Suse systems running 2.2.16 GA and have been up for 18-20 months now. We are looking at both Suse and Redhat for upgrading to the 2.4 kernel. We just installed an RH 7.2 system (kernel 2.4.9-17).
Once logged in, performance seems pretty much the same on both RH and Suse systems, but the login process is essentially instantaneous on Suse and about 2-4 minutes on RH. This seems to be true for all network related processes (ftp out of RH sits for 2-3 minutes before I get a login prompt on the target system. Suse ftp to the same system take 1-2 seconds to get a prompt). So I guess my guestion is: Does anyone have any ideas on what may be causing severe login process performance problems? The HW is an older G5, which may be the source of other issues, but that isn't something I can solve on the forum. RH was installed without a firewall. That's not the way I want to keep things, but it made it quicker for now since I didn't have to spend hours in the RH books figuring out how to get telnet, etc. re-enabled before trying the system. Any help greatly appreciated. Steve Arden [EMAIL PROTECTED] IBM-Global Services @ Lucent (630)979-7124
