In a previous posting (some parts below), I complained to Mark Post that I had one of those workstations that I could not install an SSH X server upon (no "C: drive" access). Alan Cox responded with a post about weirdmind.
I have since gotten a copy and taken it for a test drive, and find that it works with some apps, such as VI and The GIMP, but I'm not sure if it is meant to support an entire KDE desktop. If I do a startkde, I get the KDE splash screen, normal starup messages, and a visual display that resembles the KDE desktop. However, none of the KDE fuctions actually work. When I do a mouse-over, the desktop function icon disappears. If I click on the KDE task bar, nothing happens. I know weirdmind comes with a YMMV caveat, but maybe it is just my install (or misinstall). When I start KDE (either under X, or weirdmind), I see the following two sets of error messages: 1) xset: bad font path element (#44), possible causes are: Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions Directory missing fonts.dir Incorrect font server or address 2) xlib: extension "RENDER" missing on display "LINUX.XYZ:11.0" (this one happens several times) KDE still comes up, either way, but could either of these be a real problem? If you grab a copy of weirdmind it provides an in browser ssh and X server without anything being needed but the java in the web browser. X11 connections are encrypted via the encrypted ssh session. http://tam.cornell.edu/Computer/remoteaccess/weirdmind/
