If root /pass doesn't work for you (still get 401), you can set server_args = -a to disable authentication. Obviously this is a last resort kind of thing, and you definitely want your only_from = address set, and the swat service disabled pretty much always :). That being said, root _should_ work "out of the box", but I've heard in some cases -a was the only method some people could get in.
