ssh pinghost somecommand Put this command in the appropriate place in the networking scripts (if you can't find: tell us what distro). You also have to make sure that root is actually allowed to execute the command on the remote host. I figure that the best way to do that would be by using the 'command' option for a public key in the authrized_keys file (see sshd(8) ). This only works, of course, if TCP actually works.
