A couple of folks asked for numbers and I wasn't going to post them since I
didn't want to get into proper testing tools and methods, but I figured what
the heck...
Here's some unscientific numbers for ya. I'm not at all happy with the DIAG
on
top of ECKD. I don't know why it's so slow. Probably a poorly tuned VM.

Oh well, no biggy.
What I do like is the difference between the DIAG and FBA disciplines when
using
VDISK. This was my motivation (SWAP) for doing this anyway so I'm happy.
The tests were run under z/VM in an LPAR and there were other active LPARs
on the
box. The guest had 64MB storage. A "single" 3390-3 was used volume. All
unneeded
tasks were stopped and swap space was disabled. The system was IPLed clean
between
the different disciplines and 2 tests for each discipline were run. The
partitions
were formatted with the ext2fs and a filesystem blocksize of 4096.
The "Machine" column indicates the test:
"diag mr" = DIAG on top of ECKD minidisk
"eckd mr" = ECKD minidisk
"eckd dr" = ECKD dedicated
"diag mv" = DIAG VDISK
"fba mv" = FBA VDISK
"diag 4k" = DIAG VDISK w/4k blocksize (check this one out!!! :-D)
