Herve,

I forwarded your question on to our z/VM support team, and got this answer:
1. Make sure the CP directory entry for the guest says "MACHINE ESA" in it.
2. Make sure your z/VM is running in 64-bit mode: "Q CPLEVEL"
3. Make sure you have the 64-bit Linux/390 code: "uname -m" and look for
s390x instead of s390.

Mark,

Yes, we are running it as a z/VM guest. How can I be sure that this guest is
defined to run in 64-bit mode ?

Herve,

Are you running this system as a z/VM guest? If so, are you _sure_ you have
it defined to run in 64-bit mode? I find it very strange that the system
will come up and run if you have 2GB of storage, but not if you have more.
That sounds a lot like some fields that should be 64-bit are being
interpreted as 31-bit instead.

"Has anyone been able to run SLES8 64 bits with more than 2GB of storage ?
It works for me when the storage is 2GB or less but with more, it crashes
during the boot."

We're running 3 instances of 64 bit SLES8 (SP2 level) with 3-5 GB of memory.
We were also running an instance of SLES8. We have encountered no problems.
What are your symptoms?
