I guess you could say we're looking to see if the DB2 engine is part of the
problem, or if the issue is entirely within WebSphere on OS/390. We were
surprised with the absolute orders of magnitude difference in performance
on z/Linux vs OS/390. The z/Linux instance running WebSphere is getting
whatever is leftover on a 1 engine z/800. The OS/390 WebSphere is on a 3
engine z-900 and has all the weights/wlm stuff set the way we understand
from IBM it needs to be set. So why is z/Linux/WebSphere via DB2 Connect
on z/Linux delivering pages faster and doing database calls/delivery of
database data faster than WebSphere on OS/390?

The database engine does provide client support to access DB2 on any
other platform. The only thing missing is client-only support, which
would provide the same function but without the database engine.
