It goes back _WAY_ further than that. It is used, for instance, in automotive engineering. A car with hydraulic brakes - pretty well every car built since the early 1920s - has a "master" cylinder attached to the pedal and "slave" cylinders on each wheel hub. The same applies, of course, to hydraulic clutches.
