It goes back _WAY_ further than that.

It is used, for instance, in automotive engineering.  A car with hydraulic brakes - 
pretty
well every car built since the early 1920s - has a "master" cylinder attached to the 
pedal and
"slave" cylinders on each wheel hub.  The same applies, of course, to hydraulic 
clutches.

It would be apposite to return to this organisation and ask them if they are requiring 
the
suppliers of their fleet vehicles to provide service documentation using alternative
nomenclature for these hydraulic devices.
