Go to ibm.com and search for it for details. High level, it is a terminal control unit that allows you to telnet into it instead of having hard-wired 3270s. The model 2 and later have a CD (not DVD) drive in them that emulates a 3422 tape drive. The DVD (not CD) installation media is used with the DVD drive in the HMC.
