www.debian.org has just officially released Sarge as Debian Stable,
Debian Release 3.1.

Sine Nomine will, sometime pretty soon, have a fully-supported
distribution with media. (We can support you on Sarge immediately; a
packaged distribution will take a little time.)

Anyone using Debian Woody may want to check that your sources.list
contains references to "woody" not "stable", unless you ARE ready to
upgrade. If you are (and you have connectivity to a debian mirror
repository), "apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade".

Planning on going to 2.6? Read on. Otherwise, you can ignore the
rest of the message:

Be warned: the 2.6 Debian Sarge kernel image for S/390 doesn't
currently work (it's a configuration, not a code, problem); we have
an in-house build that does and we will be making this available
soon. The 2.4 image (which is the default) works fine. If you're
going to upgrade to 2.6, build the kernel yourself from the Debian
sources, and either build the kernel with CKD (or whatever you boot
from) in the kernel, or rebuild the initrd making sure that you have
the right disk driver module on the initrd and automatically loaded.
Remember that the right dasd= parameter is now dasd=0.0.150-0.0.15f,
not dasd=0150-015f, in your parmfile (assuming your disks are at
0150-015f). So change that before you run zipl.

You'll also need to reenable your Group Devices (e.g. QETH devices)
with (here, assuming that your QETH device starts at 0340):

echo 0.0.0340,0.0.0341,0.0.0342 > /sys/bus/ccwgroup/drivers/qeth/group
echo 1 > /sys/bus/ccwgroup/drivers/qeth/0.0.0340/online

After you IPL. I put this into /etc/init.d/groupdev.sh

Adam
