the problem than you have...
Yup. You're right.
And there's another clue we've been missing:
SuSE says you should do ssh -X (to port forward X sessions): do you
need an X server to run the installation? In which case, Hummingbird
SSH or XFree86 (Cygwin) plus xterm plus ssh? I haven't done any SLES
9 installs from anything but Linux boxes, and I don't remember
whether you need X or not.
I find it odd that failing to unmount a directory that wasn't mounted
in the first place would be a fatal error, too. I'm wondering if the
error message is not coming from the attempted cleanup after the
installer fails (perhaps because it can't find an X display to use).
