Stolen from page 100 of the Linux device drivers book:

For S/390 mainframes and z900 or z800 mainframes that are not exempted by
the conditions listed under "Before you start," you must associate each
OSA-Express CHPID in QDIO mode with a port name. The port name identifies
the port for sharing by other operating system instances. The port name can
be 1 to 8 characters long and must be uppercase. All operating system
instances that share the port must use the same port name.

The conditions are listed on that page of the book, which is available here:
http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/linux390/october2005_documentation.html

It really shouldn't hinder your usage. For many environments you can get
away with putting bogus values in there.

Hi List,
Does anyone know what the Portname= in the parmfile is used for ?
Under SLES9, the portname was left blank. SLES10 seems to want it.
In the future, if I had to add a second nic interface, using a different
OSA on a different port, for extreme availability purposes, will I be
hindered by this parameter ?
