Three comments...
- Of course you should evaluate SLES, regardless of what you're currently 
running on midrange hardware.  If you look back at some of my older 
presentations and articles, i.e. from before I came to work for Novell, I've 
always advocated looking at more than just one distribution.  You would be 
doing yourself and your employer a disservice if you do otherwise.
- The evaluation period for SLES for System z is 180 days.
- In either case, the 30 days from Red Hat, or the 180 days from Novell, the 
end of the time period doesn't mean you have to stop evaluating the software.  
It just means that you won't have access to maintenance updates after that 
point, unless/until you purchase a subscription.
