Nano is nice, but there are 47 zillion scripts that expect /bin/vi. It
also fails horribly on linemode terminals, where vi just adapts and
becomes a stupid 'ex' clone. 

There are nano packages for most of the distros; they're just not
installed by default. See 'editor wars' for reason.
