Start a SLES10 SP2 install using SSH.  Once you sign in, do a "df -h" command.  
You'll see 256MB of space being taken up by /mounts/instsys, which is all the 
installer code.  Then you need the memory to load those into virtual storage, 
the memory allocated by the programs, and so on.  If you want "smart" 
sophisticated installs, such as via AutoYaST, or pretty ones using VNC or X, 
this is the price.
