I wasn't speaking about DNS on the desktop, but on the server running sshd.  
SSH tries to do a reverse lookup on every IP address connecting to it.  Until 
that returns a name or times out, nothing happens.

Hmm.  A "timeout" of some kind.  What was the auth type it was waiting on?
