Native support for printing in UNIX/Linux systems, including CUPS, provides poor or weak functionality and generally isn't stable or robust enough to meet the needs of production systems. CUPS provides virtually no ability to manage output, nor the tools necessary in dealing with issues and problems that are inherent in printing. Installing CUPS may be simple, but in this case "simple" just means weak. In short - CUPS provides no "output management."
The VPSX solution from Levi, Ray & Shoup is an Output Management solution built for UNIX/Linux and Windows environments that's specifically designed to address the weaknesses and lack of functionality and flexibility inherent in systems like native UNIX spoolers and CUPS, which simply aren't well suited for production business environments. Installing VPSX on zLinux is also very simple and can be completely in a very short time, but you end up with a highly dependable and powerful solution. In addition, the VPSX solution doesn't use or require print drivers on zLinux, so all the hassles involved with dealing with print drivers is eliminated, while providing even more flexibility in terms of formatting your print jobs (whether sent to line printers or lasers) than drivers/CUPS would provide. However, VPSX can provide print driver management for Windows workstations that do require drivers. You can learn more about this simply by Googling "VPSX."
