I generally use /etc/hosts to set a name, and refer to the name.
It's easier to change a single entry on /etc/hosts than changing lots of
config files in all applications.
Using DNS increases latency, complication, and as long as you have only a
dozen or more machines, handling the hosts file isn't that hard.
