That's pretty open question. I guess the main pro and con of TSM for
z/OS is that it runs on z/OS...

What do you compare with? You could compare with TSM on AIX for
example, or embedded in the tape unit. Or compare with backup
solutions from other vendors, or with not running backups at all ;-)

Or compare with TSM running on Linux on the mainframe.

I know of several installations who moved TSM from z/OS to Linux
because it reduces the license charge for z/OS (and other licensed
products on z/OS). Many shops have a Linux on z/VM workload that is
most heavy during the day shift. TSM then fits in fine because that
can be made to consume most resources during the night (this works
less for z/OS because many z/OS systems still have heavy batch work at
night as well).

If the z/OS side is knee-capped, moving TSM to the Linux side takes
advantage of the faster IFLs as well. I don't recall seeing a MIPS/GB
comparison between TSM on z/OS and TSM on Linux. I did look at the
cost of TSM on Linux and learned that the IP network cost is a major
component. If this is the area you're looking at, we might be able to
help you with some of the sizing.

Oh, and you should be aware that TSM on Linux requires the tape drives
attached over FCP rather than FICON...
