First thanks to all who answered my inquiry. I have one additional question.
I read somewhere that there is an RPC client capability that can be used to determine what the SHARE is and how the vm is performing vis vie the SHARE settings. Is the RPC usable from within zLinux? I would like to occasionally check the cpu usage to determine if I need to raise the cap? Walter ____________________ Walter E. That's why those controls are there in z/VM. I personally would avoid using LIMITHARD unless absolutely necessary. (I'm not a performance expert in any way, shape, or form, so take this with some salt.) If you use LIMITSOFT, and your important Linux guest(s) aren't using the processors, these other images will be able to use that additional capacity. I always find it frustrating to see my lower-priority guests chugging along slowly because of a LIMITHARD, and the whole machine is otherwise pretty idle. The reason you see a difference is because most people at the same time set the nominal share to something other than before. For most Linux on z/VM installations, LIMITSOFT is really a placebo. My experiments did not show VM64721 to make a difference for that.
