I've seen these errors too (can't say for sure they were the exact
messages) after an "rpm -Uvh *". After the rpm command, I "echo $?" and
got a 0.  I reboot and the kernel level was upgraded.  So, perhaps the
messages are just warnings (kernel hackers, feel free to correct me).

For reference, in one example the "*" above expands to:
kernel-default-2.6.27.42-0.1.1.s390x.rpm
kernel-default-base-2.6.27.42-0.1.1.s390x.rpm
kernel-default-man-2.6.27.42-0.1.1.s390x.rpm
module-init-tools-3.4-70.7.1.s390x.rpm
