Apologies for the tardy response, but the answer to the question was not to
use the ixlc command from an SSH-type session. It's supposed to be executed
from a QSH session started on a 5250. Apparently, there are all sorts of
environment variables etc. that need setting up to be able to use things.

Now that's solved, I have to work out how to port/build *NIX apps in this
environment.
