You give Linux the illusion that it can drive multiple I/O operations in parallel, and leave it to z/VM to issue the I/O using the base and alias devices it has. Unfortunately you can't really tell whether you develop a relevant I/O queue in Linux (unless those kernel changes already got into s390x distributions).
