I believe the answer is buried here:

I believe that's an oblique reference to virtual IP addresses (VIPs) in 
support of virtual hosting.  These IPs really don't care which interface 
they use, which is fine when you're in a dumb hub/switch environment, but 
when learning-mode switches are watching, you need to use the same 
interface each time.  Changing to a different interfaces is an elegant 
waltz, not a mosh.
