Tom, you need to choose either active-backup or 802.3ad. Forget the other modes. Of the two, only in 802.3ad are both interfaces active at the same time, and that only works because the physical switch is participating in the illusion. The advantage of 802.3ad (link aggregation) over active-backup are twofold: 1) No packet loss during failover 2) More bandwidth than available from single interface If you don't need either, then active-backup is good enough.
