Here’s a description of the current state of Mono compatibility with .NET (core

Mono has features of both .NET Framework and .NET Core - it is a superset of 
something and a subset of others. Mono has been incorporating a lot of .NET 
Core source and the rate of incorporation has been accelerating. It really 
comes down to what specific features you are looking for.
