Hello together,

openSUSE Leap 15.3 Beta is available for
s390x. This is nice, but even more interesting than you have thought.

I care about openSUSE Tumbleweed, the rolling distribution for
s390x. When I heard that Leap is available, I searched for the Project
where this is built and only found some minimal project at
https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/openSUSE:Leap:15.3
with 134 building packages, which is by far not enough to build a
distribution.
In details, there are some new features integrated in the software
development lifecycle:

- Most of openSUSE Leap is based on the same packages as for the
upcoming SLES release (binary identical, not just same source)
- The above mentioned project builds just some additional packages for
openSUSE Leap (mostly branding and patterns)
- In future, it will be possible to switch from openSUSE Leap to a
supported SLES version without any reinstallation.

This is really cool, because you can start developing a solution with
the free Leap distribution, and switch to a supported environment, by
just replacing a single package without reinstalling or configuring
anything.

It also means that you can create Software for openSUSE Leap, and have
the same software available to SLES. Besides that, it always has been
possible to build SLES software in open build service, but now it is
even easier to use the distribution on demand feature for a local
build service and private software.

You can find the upgrade introduction in our release notes:

The list with our s390x repositories is in our openSUSE wiki:

openSUSE Leap 15.3 and SLES 15 SP3 are in the Beta phase. You are
welcome to test the switch between both distributions before the release.

Kind regards,
Sarah
