We decided to relabel the disks (cpfmtxa, label) after a Red Hat
installation with kickstart.

Clarification: A full-pack minidisk is "0 END" or "DEVNO" on the MDISK statement.
Anything else, including 1-END, is a regular minidisk. (My personal term for 1-END is
"near-full-pack".)
I agree with your suggestion that Linux not be given access to the real volser.

However, it might be a better idea if you created full-pack minidisks for the
disks (that is, cylinders 1-END instead of 0-END or dedicating the disk). That
way, your storage team will have control of the actual disk volsers, since
Linux won't be re-writing them, due to not being able to modify cylinder 0.
