You only need bi-directional parallel ports for byte-mode transfers. If you're willing 
to settle for nibble-mode transfers, four bits at a time, you can use any parallel 
port. Nibble-mode uses four of the data lines for outgoing and the four status lines 
for incoming, plus (possibly) a couple of extra lines for handshaking. It's slower, 
but frankly, worrying about being slow on an XT is like worrying about drowning in the 
desert.
