My new theory is that there is a DMA issue with the BP6 board; maybe it is
locking up during a DMA sync while idle or something. I'm going to try turning
off all dma on my box next, and see if that fixes it.
Has X been ruled out as a cause yet? Certainly console mode would have
a lot less DMA going on than X, so even if it still crashes a little on
console, crashing less might be the difference.
I notice that on reboots sometimes I get DMA hangs, leading me to suspect DMA
even more...
