Well, yes, but I wasn't getting ANYTHING, no temperature, nothing.
Turns out, apparently, that if the BIOS doesn't detect the IO port, it
switches off that functionality. The problem was with my ethernet card
being on the same IO port. Once I moved it (it was an older ISA card, I
changed to a newer PCI card) all the problems went away...
