Thanks for all the suggestions, guys.
I read Chris's FAQ and have some more data to add to the pile:
I was having some lockups before I started using the HPT, so there's more
evidence that isn't the only cause; several other things happened around the
time I started fiddling with udma though, so that's not a very clear test.
The case is a YY-0210 with the optional extra fan on the CPU side. I'm
certainly not an expert on case cooling (this is the first machine I've had
where it might be a significant issue), but this seems sane.
As I said, the machine has never been overclocked.
The power suppoly is 300W.
I don't normally have the LM sensors loaded (although that brings up another
point - when I have experimented with them, they've shown reasonable
temperatures but are convinced that only one CPU fan is on; I've manually
verified that both are spinning. I haven't seen anyone else mention this - do
I have a unique problem here?)
I have a Matrox G200 card, but the lockups do *not* seem to be X related.
Until I can get this machine stable, it's not replacing my desktop machine, so
I am normally using it over the network (it's had a 3c59x all along, and I
added an SMC tulip card last week); I've been leaving the console in text mode
to try to see error messages.
I disconnected the CD-ROM last night and moved the drive I had on the HPT to
hdb. It's certainly a lot more stable now - I was able to copy 15+gigs from
the drive to itself after that, which would have locked it up tight before. I
think I'll switch back to an SMP kernel if, in a few days, it still hasn't
locked up.
