ECC - Error Correcting Code

This is memory that can detect double-bit, and correct single-bit, errors.
I highly recommend spending the 12% more this memory typically cost just
for the peace of mind.

You can tell if your memory is ECC by counting the number of chips.  If
the number is evenly divisible by 3, its ECC.  (so 8 chips isn't, 9 is)

You do need to enable ECC in your BIOS if you have ECC memory in order to
use the feature.
